Increasing the value you create for your employer is the key to career advancement.  The more value you create, the more justification for your employer to offer you advancement.

There are an infinite number of ways for an employee to add value.  Although you should never stop thinking of new ways, a great short cut to finding the most important in the context of your job is to simply ask your boss – “What’s the best way for me to add more value?”.

Remember that their answer will give you more work, and you have to be okay with that.  If you are not willing to take on a bit more work or do things a little differently, don’t even ask.

If you really want to thrive, understanding how you add value, and how you can add more, is essential.
